In the Fall of 2020, Toronto Water approached CWN to conduct a comparative analysis. Toronto Water was interested in determining ways to improve tree planting procedures and standards in a way that minimizes conflicts between tree planting locations and water and wastewater infrastructure.

CWN undertook a structured interview process with six municipalities and utilities. The interviewed municipalities were the City of Mississauga, City of Montréal, City of Vancouver, City of Seattle, Philadelphia Water, and New York City.

Our confidential comparative analysis summarizes the standards, guidance and best practices for tree planting near water and wastewater infrastructure. The report provides recommendations and preferred approaches for addressing conflicts between grey and green infrastructure.

Toronto Water has agreed to share the confidential findings from this study with the Canadian Municipal Water Consortium Leadership Group.
