“Canadians know that water is one of our most precious resources and they recognize that real action is required to protect our water infrastructure for today and the future,\u201d says the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is why the Government of Canada has committed $2 billion through the recently announced Clean Water Wastewater Fund for immediate improvements to water distribution and treatment infrastructure. This is just one of the ways we are meeting immediate priorities in communities across Canada as part of an historic plan to invest more than $120 billion in public infrastructure over the next ten years. By working in partnership with every order of government and various stakeholders, we will target smart investments to make sure our communities remain among the best in the world to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

Municipalities want to invest wisely to address a backlog of infrastructure upgrades while adapting to pressures from growth and climate change. Earlier this year, the federal budget committed $20-billion for green infrastructure over the next 10 years in two funding phases:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Phase 1 allocates $5 billion for municipal water, wastewater and stormwater projects.<\/li>\n
  • Phase 2 will invest approximately $15-billion in green infrastructure over the next ten years, starting in 2017.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    On May 17,\u00a0Canadian Water Network convened a National Municipal Water Infrastructure Roundtable<\/strong> that facilitated engagement among senior officials from Infrastructure Canada and 19 progressive municipalities (who provide water services to over 60% of Canadians). This meeting served as a unique platform to provide input into the planning and development of sustainable water infrastructure programs over the next 10 years. Industry leaders around the table shared their perspectives and developed key recommendations that support future-ready water systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>
