While relatively new to the industry, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection has become an increasingly popular strategy for the treatment of drinking water. The purpose of this project was to review multiple disinfectant treatment strategies, focusing on potential synergies between UV and chemical disinfectants.
This purpose of this research project was to define the treatment characteristics of low-cost wastewater treatment systems for rural wastewater through a series of innovative field and laboratory scale experiments.
An inter-disciplinary effort, the project incorporated researchers and partners from universities, government and public/private sectors. Technological work was integrated as part of the “SmartWaterBC” pilot study of six IPCA systems on Bowen Island, off the coast of Vancouver.

Based on previous CWN funded-projects, the first full-scale wetland technologies have been implemented for the treatment of septage and dairy farm wastewaters, and full-scale demonstration constructed wetlands have been installed to treat domestic wastewater.
Throughout the project, the researchers assembled a unique data set consisting of geophysical, hydraulic, microbiological, geochemical, and isotopic information. Field investigations were conducted in a major municipal water supply aquifer in Fredericton, New Brunswick, which was considered to be representative of similar river valley aquifers.
Working in partnership with several municipalities, the research team accessed municipal water treatment plants in order to study and then optimize their disinfection processes.
The objective of this project was to develop an understanding of the processes related to the transport of viruses in fractured rock aquifers, and to develop tools for predicting and identifying risks of viruses in aquifers.
This project team, led by Dr. Pierre Bérubé, intends to develop the first generation of integrated membrane materials that will be capable of inactivating pathogens (viruses and bacteria) of any size and oxidizing natural organic matter.
