Demystifying science around wastewater-based surveillance

The National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID), in collaboration with Canadian Water Network (CWN), hosted a webinar focused on demystifying the science behind wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) and its role in public health.

This session highlighted key findings from the 2022 Royal Society of Canada policy brief on wastewater surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The brief outlines the diverse approaches adopted across Canadian jurisdictions. It emphasizes the value of WBS as an innovative early detection tool not only for COVID-19, but also for other emerging pathogens.

During the webinar, Dr. Steve Hrudey, professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, Monali Varia, director of public health intelligence at Peel Public Health, and Dr. Michael Becker, research scientist at the Public Health Agency of Canada, explored how WBS is being applied in Canada’s public health landscape.
