Continuously improving urban water systems through collaboration, insight, and innovation.

Canada’s communities deliver safe, affordable, and resilient drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater services. Yet municipalities are facing increasingly complex challenges, including rapid growth, rising costs, emerging contaminants, new regulatory requirements, and climate change.

At Canadian Water Network (CWN), we bring together leaders from municipalities, utilities, academia, industry, and other sectors to tackle these complex challenges collaboratively. Through initiatives like the Municipal Water Consortium and the Lake Ontario Collaborative Group, we create spaces for shared learning, strategic dialogue, and collective problem-solving.

Our unique approach combines evidence and real-world experience to support more informed decisions and foster innovation. By promoting strategic foresight and accelerating practical solutions, CWN empowers decision-makers to move forward with clarity and confidence.

Together, we’re shaping water systems that are adaptive and ready for the future.

Core Activities

This focus area supports targeted projects that respond to sector needs and emerging opportunities.

Core Programs

Municipal Water Consortium

The Municipal Water Consortium is a national network of water, wastewater, and stormwater utility leaders from 26 of the country’s largest and fastest-growing municipalities. Members access expert insights, share best practices, and co-develop solutions that enhance utility performance, avoid costly missteps, anticipate future risks, and leverage opportunities.

Lake Ontario Collaborative Group

The Lake Ontario Collaborative Group brings municipalities and provincial partners together to safeguard drinking water along the north shore of Lake Ontario. The group is developing a dynamic 3D model of the nearshore from Whitby to Mississauga that predicts how spills and runoff may affect drinking water intakes.

Looking ahead

In the coming year, CWN will continue to lead with an issues-driven approach — focusing on the topics that matter most to communities right now:

  • Identifying pathways to financial sustainability.

  • Finding cost savings through innovation.

  • Responding to emergencies or new directives.

  • Capturing a national snapshot of municipal water management trends.

Our work helps communities make better decisions.
