Sofia Fernandes has joined Canadian Water Network (CWN) as the Municipal Water Research Co-op Student for the Water and Communities program area.

In her role, Sofia will facilitate knowledge sharing, dissemination and exchange among municipal water leaders. She will also assist in researching global experts in the water sector with expertise in water servicing, climate and health.

“During my time at CWN as a co-op student, I am excited to expand my knowledge of water resource management and its intersection with sustainable land use planning,” says Sofia. “Through this experience, I aim to gain valuable insights into the policies, strategies, and research shaping water governance and environmental stewardship.”

“By applying this knowledge, I hope to develop a stronger understanding of how to integrate water sustainability into land development projects,” adds Sofia. “This opportunity will provide me with the tools to make informed, environmentally responsible decisions in my future career as a land use planner, ensuring balanced and sustainable growth.”

Sofia is currently a third-year Honours Planning Student at the University of Waterloo. Before joining CWN, she worked for the City of Brampton in the Traffic Operations department.
