As countries carefully restart their economies and ease community restrictions, a global research effort is underway to monitor the spread of the COVID-19 through wastewater surveillance. Emerging research has detected the SARS CoV-2 virus’ genetic signature in community sewage systems, including asymptomatic cases. The findings could potentially serve as an early warning for new waves of the disease.

Canadian Water Network is initiating a national response to accelerate results and enable public health decision-makers to access the most complete information available regarding community transmission. We invite municipalities, utilities, public health organizations, university teams and research labs from across Canada to sign on to the COVID-19 Wastewater Coalition.

We have outlined four guiding principles that participants must agree to abide by when conducting activities that relate to the COVID-19 Wastewater Coalition:

Principle #1 – Adopt the Coalition’s collaborative framework

Principle #2 – Frame activities to support public health decision-making

Principle #3 – Share ideas and knowledge

Principle #4 – Share results openly

Municipalities, utilities, public health organizations, university teams and research labs are invited to sign on to show your support for a national COVID-19 Wastewater Coalition.
