Bill C-59, which included the Canada Water Agency Act, received Royal Assent on June 20, 2024. The next steps for the Canada Water Agency (CWA) to officially commence its operations as an independent entity include the issuance of several orders-in-council:

  1. An order specifying the coming-into-force date of the new law.
  2. An order designating Winnipeg as the CWA’s headquarters.
  3. An order appointing an interim president for the Agency, who will serve as its deputy head.

The CWA is working to secure these orders-in-council, with the goal of launching as a standalone agency in fall 2024.
