Antimicrobial Resistance in Canada’s wastewater systems

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious and growing threat to human health. It is already causing significant illness and death worldwide, including in Canada. Without urgent action, AMR will continue to undermine the effectiveness of life-saving medical treatments and lead to major social and economic costs.
To help water sector stakeholders better understand this emerging challenge, CWN has published a primer on the connection between AMR and wastewater systems, including:
- The presence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and resistance genes in wastewater and treatment processes.
- What we know so far about how treatment systems reduce, spread, or unintentionally amplify these organisms.
- The importance of addressing AMR through a One Health approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
- Why utilities should stay informed, build awareness, and remain adaptable as new evidence, guidance, and policy continue to evolve.
While there is currently no clear consensus on best practices for water utilities, the evolving science highlights the importance of understanding the potential role of the water sector within a broader, coordinated response to AMR.
