In March 2026, the Government of Canada, led by the Canada Water Agency, launched efforts to develop Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy. Now, the Agency is inviting people across Canada to share their views and help inform its development.
Freshwater is essential to life and foundational to the ecosystems that support our health and economic competitiveness. It is critical for biodiversity, supports industry, recreation, and culture, and is an essential part of Canada’s national identity. Fresh water also holds deep spiritual and cultural significance, notably for many First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
At the same time, there is growing awareness of water security challenges in Canada, driven by an increase in the frequency and severity of floods and droughts, water quality issues, aging infrastructure, and the growth of water-dependent industries.
The development of a National Water Security Strategy is an opportunity to explore how we can address water security challenges and opportunities to support ecosystems, our quality of life and the economy—now and for future generations.
Have your say
The Canada Water Agency has launched public engagement toward a National Water Security Strategy to hear perspectives from across the country, including from people and organizations in all regions and sectors.
An online platform, open from September 9 to October 25, 2026, includes survey questions to guide feedback. You do not need technical expertise to participate. A summary of the findings will be shared later this year.
Your feedback will help inform Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy and help chart a course toward a more water-secure future—one where freshwater ecosystems are flourishing and thriving; people have access to safe, clean water; and Canadian businesses have a reliable water supply to grow in an increasingly competitive world.
Help shape Canada’s water future
Learn more about the National Water Security Strategy and the public engagement process, and share your views by completing the online survey by October 25, 2026.
