Shaping a resilient, low-carbon future through collaboration, insight, and action.

Communities and water-reliant sectors are facing growing risk and uncertainty as climate change accelerates. High-intensity rainfall, wildfires, flooding, and drought are disrupting water systems, straining infrastructure and reshaping how we plan for the future. At the same time, there is an urgent need to reduce carbon emissions.

Canadian Water Network (CWN) brings together decision-makers from municipalities, government, and the private sector to tackle these challenges collaboratively. Through initiatives like the net zero water roadmap and adaptive planning for water utilities, we accelerate solutions and drive meaningful progress through shared learning, better decisions, and collective problem-solving.

Together, we’re taking action on climate change.

Core Activities

This focus area supports targeted projects that respond to sector needs and emerging opportunities.

Core Projects

Net zero water roadmap

The net zero water roadmap brings together utilities, cleantech networks, private sector partners, regulators, and researchers to accelerate greenhouse gas reductions in municipal water services through research, innovation, and practical tools for climate-smart decisions.

Adaptive planning for water utilities

Adaptive planning (AP) is a flexible approach to utility management and infrastructure planning that considers future uncertainty to generate multiple solution pathways. CWN is adapting international best practices for use by Canadian decision-makers to strengthen climate resilience.

Climate impacts on water in the Prairies

This project explores how shifting precipitation patterns are affecting water availability and crop yields across the Canadian Prairies. Large-scale data analysis will be integrated with insights from experts and end users in the agriculture sector to support more responsive, water-smart decisions.

Looking ahead

In the coming year, CWN will lead using a proactive approach — focusing on the climate-related challenges that matter most:

  • Reaching net zero by 2050.
  • Planning under uncertainty.
  • Managing water supply and demand.
  • Adapting to extreme weather and wildfires.

We empower communities to confront climate change through informed, risk-aware decisions.
