Markham District Energy Wastewater Energy Transfer

Sometimes the biggest opportunities are hiding in plain sight.

Years ago, a sewer trunk line running beside Markham District Energy’s Warden Energy Centre was viewed as an inconvenient constraint that would complicate the routing of thermal energy piping. Today, that same infrastructure is the foundation of what will become the largest wastewater energy transfer system in North America.

Our latest case study highlights how Markham District Energy (MDE) and York Region partnered to transform wastewater into a renewable energy resource, supporting district energy expansion while advancing climate goals.

Beyond the technology, this project demonstrates that successful innovation depends on:

  • Strong alignment between partners.
  • Open communication and shared risk understanding.
  • A willingness to reconsider existing assets through a new lens.
