The Net Zero Water Project supports utilities in accelerating greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions while strengthening operational resilience and maintaining affordable, high‑quality service.
What We Do
The project is designed to help Canadian municipal water utilities move toward long‑term net‑zero emissions by providing:
- Practical pathways to reduce emissions across operations
- Access to peer insights from leading utilities
- Proven strategies that balance sustainability with service reliability
Our approach ensures that climate action is integrated into day‑to‑day utility operations—not treated as a separate initiative.
How We Support Utilities
Through collaboration with national and international experts, as well as leading communities, the project enables utilities to:
- Learn what’s working in real-world settings
- Adapt solutions to local contexts and constraints
- Build confidence in implementing new approaches
- Reduce risk while responding to evolving climate, regulatory, and community expectations
A strong emphasis is placed on implementation, helping utilities move from planning to action.
Building a Connected Water Sector
A key goal of the Net Zero Water Project is to foster a strong, collaborative network across the water sector. By developing shared tools and resources, strengthening relationships between utilities, and capturing and sharing lessons learned, the project ensures that no utility faces these challenges alone. This connected approach enables participants to benefit from collective knowledge, support one another in advancing emissions reduction efforts, and accelerate progress across communities
Project Funding
This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada under the Implementation Readiness Fund. This grant will support CWN’s project, “Charting the Course to Net Zero Water: Mobilizing Canada’s Municipal Water Network for Greenhouse Gas Mitigation” and will focus on developing networks and sharing knowledge. The project is active until March 2027.
